THE MECHANICAL TOE

The Mechanical Toe is a simple and oddly amusing device for propelling miniature footballs and tennis balls around the backyard. Unquestionably, you can throw a football farther than this contraption can toss it, but that’s not really the point. The MT (Mechanical Toe) is easy to build, fun to use, and lends itself to a variety of experiments, some scientific and some simply amusing.

SAFETY

To kick a miniature football, the Mechanical Toe simulates the action of the human leg. The MT’s power source is a stretched elastic cord, usually called a bungee cord. Bungee cords are capable of storing considerable energy when stretched. You must make certain that your cord is securely attached and in good condition prior to using the MT.

I suggest wearing safety glasses and gloves, at least during the initial test and the first few trials.

Clear the area in front of the MT, especially during test kicks, as the toe piece could come loose if not properly cemented.

Be sure to keep hands and feet clear from the impact area under the handle at all times.
